TIL when J.R.R. Tolkien wanted to publish ‘The Hobbit’ in Germany in 1938, the Nazi publishers asked him if he was a true Aryan. He replied sarcastically “if you are enquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people.”

  1. It gets better though. Before he highlighted the jewish people so glowingly, he essentially tore the nazi concept of what an “aryan” even was. I can’t remember the exact quote nor could I do justice to how politely viscous this man was in dismantling their ideology. Its fucking epic and your shoulder totally look up the actual quote, it will brighten your day if you like seeing nazis beaten into submission, because Tolkien phrased his reply to be the last thing that could be said on the subject.
