Today I Learned that the image of Smokey the Bear undergoes more enforced regulation than the American flag. This is not hyperbole, the US government has to give explicit permission for anyone to have a costume, and does not allow Smokey The Bear to be depicted in any way that is demeaning to him.

When I was a kid, my dad took me to see Smokey at the National Zoo.
Fun fact – his name is actually Smokey Bear – no ‘the’
Edited to add: OP, you weren’t kidding. Check [this out](https://www.fs.usda.gov/sites/default/files/finalsmokeyhandoutsacessibleforweb.pdf)
So I can’t dress up as Smokey for Halloween and do a rubbish job of my costume? Cuz, now I wanna.
There’s got to be a Smokey the Bear porn parody
I hate to ask, but I’m driven by morbid curiosity, has Smokey the bear been rule34ed? Or what?
Wow.. when a mascot bear has more rights/respect than national flag.
The bear’s name is Smokey Bear not Smokey the Bear.
Smokey was born on Bear Island, a secret government breeding location that produces bears 50 times as fearsome as those Jellystone slackers Yogi and Boo-boo.
